On Wednesday, we set off bright and early for Budapest,
flying from London Stansted. The flight was about 2 hours and probably one of
the smoothest Ryanair flights I’ve ever been on. We arrived in Budapest at
lunchtime, ready for an afternoon of exploring. We had to drop our cases at the
hostel first (LOL Hostel Budapest), which was just next to Budapest’s Opera
House. To get to the hostel, we had to take a bus and the underground. The
Hungarian metro was really impressive! The metro itself was very open plan,
there was hardly any wait between metro stops and the map was very easy to read
– nothing like the labyrinth that is the London Underground map.
After checking in, we headed straight out for some food and
we came across a nice garden restaurant right next to our hostel. We had
burgers which were very yummy and just what we needed after lots of travelling
and a 5am start.
We went to the tourist areas in the late afternoon/early
evening for one of the “free walking tours”. I was completely new to the free
walking tour concept, but it’s totally worth going on one as you get a really
informative tour of the city without having to pay more than a small tip at the
end. As we’d just arrived, it was an opportunity for us to scout out places to
visit later in the trip, whilst also learn a bit more about the city’s history.
The tour meeting point was Vörösmarty Square, which was a really lovely place to
sit and soak up the Budapest atmosphere.
At the end of the tour, we headed straight to the ‘best
waffle house in Budapest’, that the tour guide had recommended. I ordered a
nutella waffle and it was delicious! Of course I had to take a photo of it.
We headed back to the hostel afterwards, so that we could
get an early night. We wanted to be awake early the next day so that we'd have a full day of sightseeing!
It was a great first day in Budapest.
Have you ever been?
Thanks for reading my blog today.
